A galloping birthday surprise for Jacqueline

A resident from Riversway Nursing Home, Bristol, celebrated her birthday with a visit from a pony.

Jacqueline, 87, was surprised by staff at Riversway with the visit by Apollo the Shetland pony, after she shared her passion for horses.

Jacqueline has been passionate about horses since she was a youngster and often talks about her riding days with one of her favourite horses Tatatina.

Special guests on the day included children from a local nursery, regular visitors to the home thanks to a link between the two organisations, who joined in with Jacqueline’s celebrations.

Riversway felt & gardening workshops

This week Riversway had a lovely visit from local artist Becky, who conducted a felting workshop with residents.

Everyone who took part loved creating patterns and shapes, and residents agreed that it was very therapeutic creating art with the soft coloured wool.

Later we had fun with a gardening session which is becoming more and more popular with residents. This focused on aromatic herbs such as Majoran, different types of sage, chives, Moroccan mint, lemon balm and many more.

Residents enjoyed discussing their favourite recipes to cook using herbs and reminisced about memories in the garden.

The creativity at Riversway never stops.

Nursery visit for happy residents

Three of our residents headed to Stepping Stone Nursery in Speedwell, Bristol, for a visit.

The trip was the second time we’ve visited the nursery, and our residents Lucy, Betty and Mary very much enjoyed the chance to sing some nursery rhymes.

They even received a present from the children – a colourful necklace made of pasta. It’s great to see our residents interacting with the young children and to see everyone involved get so much from the opportunity.

Representing Riversway

A team of staff from Riversway showcased working life at the home during a local job fair.

The event took place at The Galleries shopping centre in Bristol and included a range of stalls from all types of healthcare providers set up for members of the public to see what is on offer.

Trudy and Deborah had a great day speaking to people about the job opportunities and career pathways at Riversway, and also enjoyed meeting charity representatives looking to place people with learning difficulties in the care sector.

They enjoyed the job fair and believe it’s a great way to get Riversway’s name out there for people to see and to highlight our vision of 'we hope to be the service provider and employer of choice in the communities in which we serve'.

We were even told by the organisers that we had the best, and busiest, stand.

A trip to the Wild Place Project

Riversway residents had a real treat this week when they visited the Wild Place Project, a local wildlife conservation attraction.

They saw a number of animals mainly from African regions – favourites included giraffes and cheetahs. One monkey even put on a show for the residents, showing of his acrobatic skills whilst swinging from a rope in one of the conservation areas.

While the weather was beautiful everyone sat outside and enjoyed a picnic at tables outside the restaurant. It’s a beautiful park and they all enjoyed a lovely day.
